Bubble Gum Machines

Remember when you were little and the best part about going to the grocery store with your parents, was getting a surprise from the bubblegum machine after checkout.

Well, that is, if you were good.

I was always good when I was little.  I was a quiet, little angel with a mop of brown curly hair.  I never gave my parents any trouble.  It wasn't until I reached the age of twenty-something that I became a handful.

I have migrated back to being that good girl.  I have made peace with her.

When I recently found this grouping of machine ball treat heaven, it brought me right back to that time when I was little...standing there in the grocery store with my shiny coin, patiently deciding which round sphere I wanted.

Did I want something sweet?  Sour?  Gum? A small trinket like a ring or a sticker?  The decisions were often nerve wracking?

Do children get the same enthusiasm over gum ball machines or is it something of the past?  The ability to choose a small prize with just one coin...

This is Home Girl and I hope today is like these fun dispensers...colorful and sweet.  We get out what we put into it, huh?  Deuces.

We were pretty poor, but my parents often found a dime for me. But sometimes my grandpa would give me a quarter and then I could get one of those plastic containers with a ring in it. That was really a great moment in life. Thanks for the memory, M!

It was a really special treat for me to get a coin. I couldn't seem to stop begging relentlessly and would often be denied because of it. My youngest is a bubblegum expert!! She loves bubble gum. I always filled her stocking with it. I was with her this year as she was buying the contents of her son's stocking. She looked at me at one point and said, "This is so much fun, I never knew I would love buying things for someone as much as I do him! You must have had 5 times as much fun with all of us!" It is more fun to give than to recieve!! Boy, did I get way off track here!!

The little grocery store that a Hungarian couple owned just down town in our little town where I grew up had two gum ball machines just outside the store. I remember ALWAYS begging for a penny so I could get a little gumball. Every time we went, that was our treat...as long as we were well behaved...and we ALWAYS were because we wanted that little gumball at the end of the grocery shopping trip. :)

Great photos!
